It Will Be a Clean Year with Amathia Soap

Box-from-Amathia-Soapworks

Soap supplies have started to dwindle in the household… I have a 1/4th of a bottle of body wash, a 1/3 bottle of dish soap, 1/2 a bottle of laundry soap and only the tiniest amount of toothpaste left (more on this later)… and it was a serious fear because without being able to properly clean oneself, the likelihoods of infections (such as my cuticle infection from a couple weeks ago), illness and other life complications could arise.

And then… I received a box from Amathia Soapworks. And the box smelled incredible… and I got very excited… and then I opened it and got even more excited. You see… it was FILLED with different artisan soaps! Now, Amathia Soapworks isn’t a big operation… every batch is made small (under 10lbs) and they do it in a process called cold process. They use the highest quality possible and they are all vegan products and chemical free! Considering they are a family operation (based out of the States), when you place an order you’re going to be dealing with the same people who are actually making the soap. And, if you look at the prices… you’re going to be blown away as well!

Now, let’s look into the box! Honestly though, the world needs to develop a way to transmit scent because these soaps smell DELICIOUS! But not only do they smell absolutely incredible – they are art! They really are really attractive looking items! Now let’s be honest… I’m a guy so my traditional soap is whatever is on sale that week… but after having used these today, I might be hooked… They just feel better!

Overall Amathia Soap sent me ten soaps:

  • Terra, which smells like a forest. Evergreeny. Natural.
  • Relax, which is a Lavender-Mint mix that isn’t overwhelming. Lavender often can be too powerful, but she’s found a great mix!
  • Dew, a mix of lime and basil is like a spicy key lime pie. Very mild in scent, but nice on the nose.
  • Sunshine Splash, is a citrusy mix but incredibly mild in it’s scent. The kind of soap you should use before eating seafood haha. Can you pair what you wash in with what you eat?! I feel like that could be a thing.
  • Detox, is a dead sea mud facial soap. I know about all the benefits of that dead sea mud and this has a nice light citrus scent to it.

The second row, from left to right includes:

  • A mystery soap that I can’t quite place. It smells a bit minty but I’m not 100% sure.
  • Edible Raspberry Vanilla Shea Butter, is NOT meant to be eaten.. but boy does it smell like it could be. I’m drooling over it and now want raspberries and vanilla ice cream!
  • Fresh Lemon Verbena Shea Butter, smells like cleanliness. Kind of like a lemon pledge for your body. It’s the one I now use to wash my hands with in the bathroom!
  • Herbal Rosemary Mint Shea Butter, smells like a delicious sauce to pour onto a nice piece of lamb.
  • Clarify Tea Trea Charcoal Facial Soap, is clearly perfect for when I might have some acne.. and with activated charcoal it just steps it up to a whole ‘nother level!

Honestly, the soaps are so powerful in their scent that I’ve put them in different places of my empty apartment and they are acting like air fresheners!

In addition, Amathia Soapworks also included two other items… one, a soap tray to help drain the water off of it and make it last… and two, something called a soap saver bag, which you use when the soap is too small to hold and it acts like loufa or a washcloth! Pretty cool idea and doesn’t feel ‘girly’. Haha.

And lastly, they also included two other items… a lip balm of sorts, one in the scent of Asian Pear and the other Peppermint… and I’m thrilled! I had one little lip balm that I threw into my bag last minute on January 1st… that has almost run out. This time of year is especially bad for chapped lips – especially considering I lick my lips a lot when I’m stressed. So this is such a god send (and the peppermint one gives me that incredible bit of tingle that mint often does).

At $6 for a bar of artisan soap, from someone you know who is making them and doing it with the top ingredients, vegan and in a natural way… you’re getting a steal. While this batch was sponsored for the project – come 2014 I can guarantee her that I will be placing an order for some soaps! (If you guys want to come experience them yourself, come by my apartment!) And to stay up to date on all things Amathia Soapworks related, check them out on Twitter and Facebook!

Sidenote: As I mentioned above… brushing my teeth. Did you know that it’s shown to be better to brush your teeth with soap than it is to brush with toothpaste? While the thought is a bit weird at first, with a soap like these I imagine the experience might be slightly better than mass produced soap! I’ll  have an update on that soon when the toothpaste runs out!

Yay yay yay! As I may have mentioned, I’m a HUGE Amathia fan! My secret tip for handmade soap use is to cut the bar into thirds, I just use a regular kitchen knife, so that it lasts longer because the part you’re not using stays dry. Also, I did use soap for my teeth for a while because I was having trouble finding flouride-free toothpaste (yes, I’m that kind of hippie lol,) and it’s not as odd as you’d think. I’d suggest going with Herbal since your brain is most likely trained to expect minty toothpaste. I love her lip balms, too, I have the peppermint and the tingle is really nice. This part is totally a girl thing, but I aso love that the unique shape makes it easy to find in my bag.

I do love buying from family operations, and this one in particular because I know Kenna personally and I see the lovely faces of the family she helps support with her company. Plus, she just makes damn good soap, and I hope your readers take the time to check it out!

Ahhh smart tip on the cutting it further! Makes total sense!

And yeah, I think what I may do – is if there is someone interested in giving it a shot, maybe give them a small piece to experience it themselves :P I’m hooked though!

Also, I should add that I’ve washed my hair with Kenna’s soap from time to time when I was in a hurry. Not sure whether you’d want to do so long-term, but good to know!

I need someone (either you, or someone from Amathia) to explain about the brushing teeth with soap. I just can’t picture this. I don’t understand it.

Haha, well she’s not promoting brushing your teeth with soap – it’s just been something I’ve been aware of for a long time. I actually linked off to a very brief article about it and some of the major benefits of soap over toothpaste – http://www.torontosun.com/life/healthandfitness/2011/01/19/16947581.html

It won’t give me minty fresh breath, but based on a lot of things I’ve been reading lately – will do a better job at keeping your teeth cleaned than toothpaste will.

(I’ll chew the gum Dentyne gave me or suck on a Vitamint for the good breath haha.)

“Tooth Soap” is actually patented by a company!

If it’s formulated properly, it won’t taste bad. Cold process soap maintains the glycerin from the chemical reaction of creating soap, which actually tastes a little sweet (it’s used in a lot of food!). Add in a proper flavor, like Peppermint Essential Oil, and voila – soap for brushing your teeth. :) It doesn’t foam as much as toothpaste, but it works pretty well.

If you try it, Zach, I would recommend using Relax (lavender mint) or Herbal (rosemary mint). :)

Meredith, I’ve done it. It was a plain handmade cold-process soap with peppermint oil, just as Kenna mentioned. It doesn’t taste that soapy, but most toothpastes are sweetened so it does seem really “not sweet” in comparison – not bitter, just not sweet. My teeth felt very clean when I was using it. Many natural product users prefer it as a way to avoid flouride or unpronounceable chemicals.

Oh man! So you know how I had my husband pick your soap? He’s color blind. And the one labelled Sunshine is actually Splash. LOL This is why I normally do it. ;) He can’t tell the two of those apart!!

I hope it lasts you through the end of the year, Zach, nobody wants a stinky blogger around. :) Enjoy!

I’m playing my favourite game – name that soap! Kenna, I’m thinking that in that bottom row it’s Herbal on the left and another Terra second from the right? It looks the same as the Terra above and I can’t think of anything else that looks like that.

      • http://ZachBussey.com/ Zach

Hmm let me know if I have them wrong! Haha.

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=583515089 Louise Casey

Sorry, Zach, you could be right, but this is a game I love. Kenna used to sell this Sudsy Sampler – a 1 lb bag of end cuts and scraps, I bought one to try out some scents I was afraid to buy a whole bar of, and the kidlet and I spent a substantial amount of time holding soap pieces up against the pictures on the screen to see what we had. I don’t get out much. :D

Yay for cleanliness! Those soap sound devine – what a great little treat for you.
It you’re looking for another toothpaste-less option, you can always give a miswak a try: http://www.clublifemagazine.ca/2012/09/03/chew-on-this/ I’m very intrigued by the idea of them.

    • http://ZachBussey.com/ Zach

A major treat indeed! And that Miswak looks interesting… who knew? I’d try it haha, need a tree supply haha.

From the sounds of it you’ll enjoy these very much. My only hesitation is that I’d have to import them. Depending on the shipping cost though, I’m will to definitely give it a try.

Thanks for the post and suggestion.

Shipping prices were reasonable on the package I received. Order for the year, and it’s still a great price!
